Toothache Remedies

It is important to see your dentist as soon as possible if you are having an issue with your teeth or gums. If it is not possible to see your dentist right away, there are natural and home remedies you can try while you wait for your appointment.

5 Toothache Remedies

While tooth issues should usually only be treated and diagnosed by a dentist, we understand that there may be times you cannot make it in immediately. We have compiled 5 at home remedies we recommend trying before you can get in to see us:

  1. Saltwater Rinse & Swish
  2. Cold Compresses
  3. Over-the-Counter Pain Medicine
  4. Cloves
  5. Peppermint Tea

Make sure you let your dentist know which remedies you tried at home and how they made you feel – especially if you took OTC Pain Medicine!

1. Saltwater Rinse

Saltwater rinses can help reduce inflammation and dislodge debris stuck between your teeth. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in warm water and swish the mixture around for 30 seconds before spitting it out. This may sting but should not cause major pain.

2. Cold Compress

Cold compresses help to numb the pain and reduce swelling. Hold a cold compress or an ice pack to the affected area for a few minutes at a time to reduce the pain.

3. Over the Counter Pain Medication

Over the counter pain medications like acetaminophen and ibuprofen can help manage pain. Ibuprofen is also an anti-inflammatory. Take the medication as directed on the bottle and do not try any medications that you are not already comfortable with during this process.

4. Cloves

Cloves have a natural anesthetic in them. Soak a cotton ball in clove oil and apply to the affected area for pain relief. Whole cloves can also be chewed and held in place to the affected area to release the oil.

5. Peppermint Tea

Peppermint tea, like cloves, can also numb the pain. The menthol in the peppermint leaves also have antibacterial properties. Add one teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves to a cup of boiling water and let cool for 20 minutes. Once the tea has cooled, swish it around and either spit it out or swallow.
